we woke up at 530, and set off for the village at 630. arrived at 8, and started setting up the dispensary and CM stuff and the "clinics"-one adult by dr kevin, and one pediatrics by dr junior. marilyn, david, JJ and i were at dispensary. it was.. tough. initially. because we had to familiarise ourselves with the various medication available, where they were placed, and we had to set up a system to label them. for examply tds= thrice daily, so we would have to write on stickers (1) x 3, meaning 1 tab/spoon three times a day. theres qds, bd, om, on etc.. so yup. plus, we needed to decifer uncle juniors handwriting! which was a bit difficult at first!
we had a translator who would explain to the patients hwo to take the medication.
clinic was terribly busy...
there was already a queue when we arrived.
we worked from 830-1, and 2-530.
i think the doctors saw more than 100 patients that day.
all sorts of cases from tumours, congenital ectimosis, common colds, pneumonia and head lice probs.
uncle junior was quite a good teacher, occassionally calling us medical students to explain cases to us, and also... throwing the question i hate most "whats the differential diagnosis for this case?" oops... he always asks me "sarah how old do u think this kid is?" shucks.... how would i know? never did do peds.. no yet. but well, at least i know a bit more now. haha
all in all, day one was good.
i learnt loads from dispensing medicine,
learnt to coomunicate with kids through body langauge, and more importantly, rediscovered my passion and interest for young kids...
i love babies so much!
